"Number of groups" is for when you know exactly how many groups you need — say, 4 groups for 4 tables, or 6 groups because that's how many stations your activity has. "Group size" is for when you have a target headcount in mind instead, like "about 3 per group," and want the tool to work out how many groups that becomes. Either mode produces groups that are as evenly sized as possible, differing by at most one student, so you'll never end up with one oversized group absorbing everyone the other groups couldn't fit.
When teachers or team leads build groups by hand, the same patterns tend to reappear — friends cluster together, stronger and weaker students separate out, and the same few pairings show up group after group. That's not usually intentional, but it's hard to avoid when a human is making dozens of small decisions at once. A random draw sidesteps all of that. Every student has an equal chance of landing with every other student, the process takes seconds instead of minutes of deliberation, and nobody can read favoritism or exclusion into a computer-generated list the way they might into a hand-picked one.
Turn on "Avoid repeating groupmates from last round" and each reshuffle tries several arrangements internally, keeping the one with the fewest matches to your previous groups before showing you the result. This is genuinely useful for classes that regroup often — weekly project teams, for instance — where students would otherwise notice the same three or four names clustering together every single time. It's worth being upfront about the limits, though: with larger group sizes, a fully repeat-free result isn't always mathematically possible in a single pass (a group of 5 alone contains 10 unique pairings), so treat this as a meaningful reduction in repeats rather than an absolute guarantee of zero overlap.
Real class lists rarely divide perfectly. If 22 students are split into 4 groups, the tool doesn't leave 2 students stranded in their own tiny group — it distributes the remainder across the groups instead, so you'd get sizes of 6, 6, 5, and 5 rather than four groups of 5 plus an awkward pair. The same balancing logic applies regardless of which mode you use, so switching between "number of groups" and "group size" never produces a lopsided result.
